The "Big Six"

The "
Big Six" are the six most important challenges for Sustainable Development in the 21st century (see SCOPE graph from UNEP GEO 2000 Outlook). These imply measures that need to be taken mainly in developing countries. All of these issues have already been described in "Our Common Future" (1987) and in the Agenda 21 (1992). The "Big Six" were named in 2002 by Dr. Axel Hesse (SD-M) in the Öko-Invest Nr. 268/02 (pdf - 293 KB) and were elaborated in more detail until 2006 (see: Hesse, Axel, Big Six - The six most important global challenges for Sustainable Development in the 21st century, Muenster 2006, German with English abstract, figures and quotations, pdf - 6448 KB):

Big Six: Climate Change
Big Six: Freshwater
