Poverty
Poverty is multi-dimensional: low levels of income,
consumption or education; malnutrition; poor health; powerlessness; fear; and humiliation.
Worldwide, 2.8 billion people live on less than 2 US$ a day. 1.2 billion have even less than
1 US$ available (see graph, Paris 21, 2000).
Infant mortality rates are 6 out of 1000 children under 5 years in industrialized countries.
The global average is 81/1000, while 172 infants out of 1000 die in Sub-Saharan Africa before
they reach their sixth birthday.
In some countries, 40% of the population are already infected with HIV/AIDS.
